Will you looky here, looky here…. 3 white male rapists. 3 probation sentences. A year of probation and a day in jail. 6 months probation. 2 years probation. No these aren’t sentences for misdemeanor crimes, they are for sexual assault and rape. Yes, ladies and gentleman. These men sexually assaulted women and together they have received 1 day in jail. FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING WOMEN.
The excuses the white judges have used when sentencing the poor white sensitive boys is always around the same idea. The notion of not wanting to ruin college for them just making a regrettable mistake. We couldn’t possibly want to ruin the experience of college life for these students who might have ruined college and LIFE for the women they took advantage of.
The excuse is always “we don’t want to ruin the men’s lives”, but the reality they should say we don’t want to ruin “white men’s lives.” In 2012 in a study done by M.Marit Rehavi of the University of British Columbis and Sonja B. Starr of the University of Michigan Law School found that “the racial disparities can be explained in a single prosecutorial decision: whether to file a charge carrying a mandatory minimum sentence….Black men were on average more than twice as likely to face a mandatory minimum charge as white men were, holding arrest offense as well as age and location constant. Prosecutors are about twice as likely to impose mandatory minimums on black defendants as on white defendants. In federal cases, black defendants faced average sentences of 60 months, while the average for white defendants was only 38 months.” Main article
We have got to stop saying that race is not a predictor. We have to because they facts are telling us the complete opposite. They are telling us that regardless of how heinous the crime is that the soft, sensitive, misunderstood white boy is more important than the sexually abused female. We as females are being told that even though there is proof beyond a shadow of a doubt, caught in the act, found by a neutral source- all the things you would want in a case, that it still isn’t enough to put the sex offenders in jail.
These rape case sentences tell me that although we as women have made great strides forward, that our court system is making giant strides back. Our court system is showing us how they truly feel about people of color when a person of color will get years for selling weed, but a white man will get probation for rape. The court system shows us that it won’t protect the victims of the crime over the sensitive nature of the criminal. David Becker, an 18 year old, sexually assaulted two girls who had fallen asleep with his fingers. He thought he was ok because the girls didn’t say no. In regards to the punishment, “Becker’s defense attorney, Thomas Rooke, did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment, but he told The Republican that his client “can now look forward to a productive life without being burdened with the stigma of having to register as a sex offender.”
YESSSSSSS!!! Becker can lead a productive life of not being burdened with the stigma of registering as a sex offender and being required to let people know that he has actually assaulted women. We wouldn’t want that would we. Well, I mean as a woman I would. But obviously the judge doesn’t care about what we think, or even what society thinks.
White privilege is real, it is not a made up term people of color just made up for no reason. It is a fact, there is proof and data behind it. Race is the #1 predictor of wealth, education, health disparities, and prison terms. We can’t even begin to tackle inequality, racial injustice, systemic racism, or anything else if you do not want to even admit that there is one race superior over others. One race through laws has been allowed to step ahead while pushing down another. Even though slavery ended 300 years ago the remnants still haunt us very realistically today. You can’t go from slavery to jim crow to now and have complete equality, especially when the mindset and unconscious still favors the superior race. It isn’t possible.
We are consistently seeing the racial inequalities of prison terms being played throughout the media and social media which is a step in the right direction. Those inequalities are no longer allowed to hide in the dark and only heard through the protests of people of color. We are seeing the true evidence of a justice system that abides by two sets of rules- a light and a dark set. The question to ask ourselves is how can we as a society help fix the justice system that doesn’t want to admit there is a race issue and is supposed to be protecting us equally?
