The lead-up to the recent inauguration had me feeling all kinds of emotions—some hopeful, some heavy. I know I’m not alone in that. So many of us are dealing with the constant buzz of news, social media outrage, and opinions flying at us from every direction. It’s overwhelming. That’s why in this episode of Five with Fry, I’m talking about how to navigate the chaos without losing yourself, your health, or your hope.
We cover five big ideas in this episode, so let’s break it down.
1️⃣ Self-care isn’t optional.
Seriously, it’s not a luxury—it’s a must, especially when things get wild. Self-care looks different for everyone. Maybe it’s turning off the news, setting boundaries with people who drain your energy, or just taking some time to read or meditate. Whatever it is for you, do it unapologetically.
Here’s the truth: ignoring your mental health doesn’t make the stress go away. It builds up. Next thing you know, you’re burned out, anxious, or feeling totally hopeless. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s how you stay in the game for the long haul.
2️⃣ Pay attention to how you’re feeling.
Sometimes we don’t even notice how much the world around us is affecting us until it’s too late. Are you snapping at people? Feeling disconnected? Just flat-out exhausted? Those are signs that you need to check in with yourself.
When you start to recognize how your mood, behaviors, and energy are being impacted, you can make better choices—like limiting your media intake or reaching out to a friend who lifts you up. It’s all about taking small steps to protect your emotional well-being.
3️⃣ Apathy isn’t neutral—it’s harmful.
Look, I get it. Politics can feel exhausting and messy. But choosing to stay out of it isn’t a neutral stance—it’s harmful. It stalls conversations, delays progress, and enables injustice to continue unchecked.
We can’t afford to disengage. Even when it’s frustrating, even when it feels like nothing’s changing fast enough, showing up matters. Advocacy, voting, and having tough conversations are how we push things forward.
4️⃣ Stop waiting for the “perfect” candidate.
This one’s for the Democrats (yes, I’m going there). The search for the ideal candidate has got to stop. While Republicans rally around their key issues, we sometimes hold out for someone who checks every box, and in the process, we lose opportunities to make real progress.
Is it important to have high standards? Of course. But change doesn’t come from sitting around waiting for perfection. It comes from supporting leaders who can move the needle, even if they aren’t flawless.
5️⃣ Change takes time—commit to the long haul.
This is a marathon, not a sprint. Real, meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes persistence, resilience, and a willingness to keep showing up, even when it’s hard.
History has proven time and again that sustained effort leads to transformation. Whether it’s fighting for more diverse representation in politics or advocating for inclusive policies, we all have a role to play. And it’s going to take all of us sticking with it, even when it feels exhausting.
This episode is all about finding that balance—taking care of yourself while staying engaged in the fight for change. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to move forward, I hope it gives you some inspiration and practical steps to take.
